Demo Gap Analysis
What the demo has, what it's missing for the 4-pillar brief, and what needs to be built — specifically for the Energy and Water pillars which require supplier data integration.
Core Brief
4-Pillar Status
The brief requires equal coverage across Waste, Emissions, Water, and Energy.
Waste — Vendor & Client Compliance Map
Gap: Vendor/client compliance map visualization would strengthen the pillar — transport view and TSAS data exist but aren't rendered as a compliance map.
Emissions — Carbon Exposure Tracker
Gap: Scope 3 (transport) is calculable from manifest journey distances. Scope 1 (facility fuel combustion) and Scope 2 (electricity) require energy data from the client's ERP or utility billing — not in the current pipeline.
Water — Abnormal Usage Alert
Gap: The ESGReport schema has waterWithdrawnMl, waterDischargedMl, waterConsumedMl fields ready — but no water data flows into them. Requires integration with municipal utility billing or on-site meter data.
Energy — Renewable Investment What-If
Gap: No energy consumption data model exists. Requires kWh data by site from Eskom billing or facility management system, plus fuel consumption records for Scope 1.
Root Cause
The Energy & Water Data Gap
The demo is built on waste manifest data only. Energy and water require a separate data integration.
| Report | Status | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| GRI 306 — Waste | Live | Manifest data covers all required metrics — fully complete. |
| GRI 305 — Scope 3 (transport) | Live | Journey distances on manifests × emission factor = valid Scope 3 Cat 4. |
| GRI 305 — Scope 1 | Data gap | Facility fuel combustion data not in manifest pipeline. Requires ERP/fleet fuel records. |
| GRI 305 — Scope 2 | Data gap | Electricity consumption (kWh) per site absent. Requires Eskom billing or energy management system. |
| GRI 303 — Water | Data gap | No water data in pipeline. Requires municipal utility data or on-site meter readings. |
| GHG Protocol | Partial | Scope 3 transport calculable; Scope 1 & 2 require energy integration. |
| TCFD Climate | Partial | Transition risk model ready; carbon tax exposure incomplete without Scope 2. |
Integration Scope
What Supplier Integration Means
Data sources needed to complete the Energy and Water pillars.
Energy Data Sources
- Eskom billing API / utility portal — electricity kWh per site per month (Scope 2)
- Fuel purchase records from ERP or fleet management — diesel, LPG per site (Scope 1)
- On-site meter readings from facility management system
Water Data Sources
- Municipal utility billing — water withdrawn per site per month
- On-site treatment plant records — water discharged and consumed
- Borehole / groundwater meter readings where applicable
For the demo: The platform schema already has the right fields (scope1Co2e, scope2Co2e, waterWithdrawnMl etc.). For the Interwaste presentation, the energy and water gaps are shown transparently — framed as the natural scope of the prototype partnership. "The platform is built to receive this data. What Interwaste's clients can supply is what we'd define together."
Build Priorities
What Needs to Be Built
Ordered by presentation impact. Integration-dependent items marked with a connector icon.
| Gap | Priority | Build effort | Demo impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-pillar dashboard navigation (equal weight to all 4 pillars) | P1 | Low–Medium | High |
| Emissions carbon tracker widget (Scope 3 transport only — honest about gap) | P1 | Medium | High |
| Dashboard context label — 'Interwaste Client View' to clarify perspective | P1 | Low | High |
| Synthetic energy + water data wired to report generator | P2 | Medium | High — completes demo report suite |
| Mock integrations page showing data source connectors | P2 | Low | Medium — makes architecture legible |
| Water abnormal usage alert widget (needs synthetic spike data) | P2 | Medium | Medium |
| Waste vendor/client compliance map visualization | P2 | Medium | Medium |
| Energy renewable investment what-if calculator | P3 | High | Medium — fully synthetic, most complex |
Items marked with this icon depend on energy or water data integration (real or synthetic).

What's Demo-Ready Today
Seven capabilities that can be demonstrated now without any additional development.
Audit trace — click any number, trace to source document (manifest, PDF, invoice). Works end-to-end.
AI document ingestion — drag-and-drop any file type. Actual Interwaste PDFs (BLW manifests, weighbridge records) are pre-loaded.
Anomaly detection — messy_ingest_demo.csv shows flags, rejections, severity levels, and resolution workflow.
ESG report generation — all 8 frameworks compile in one click (waste figures valid; energy/water figures shown as absent).
AI narrative drafting — publication-ready report narrative generated in ~20 seconds from compiled data.
Natural language query — ask questions against the waste database in plain English; answers live.
ZW2L scorecard — per-site Zero Waste to Landfill progress with landfill vs. diverted tonnage, visual and interactive.
